They knew where she was, what she was reading, when she was most likely to click. And once she clicked, the spyware would install silently, take control, and begin reporting back every aspect of her digital life.
Even worse: she wasn’t the only target. At least 25 journalists, activists, and human rights lawyers in Mexico were hit during the same period, many of them linked to investigations of corruption and abuse of power.
Among them was Aristegui’s teenage son.
He had no political affiliations. He wasn’t involved in her reporting. He was simply close to someone who was. That proximity was enough.
This case made international headlines. But most of the coverage missed a critical point: this wasn’t just about surveillance. It was about predictability.
